MA175: Ask anyone who KNOWS ethnic jewelry: this is truly a bracelet that is very hard to find, in the Maghreb or elsewhere. I think that is because it has such good proportions and is easy and comfortable to wear. It's one of those pieces you never get tired of, because it is both pretty, and convenient! THAT can be a tough combination to find in ethnic/tribal styles. I've had this for over 12 years. I never planned on selling it. It's a keeper. Most of these must be lolling away in private collections. I've just decided i better bring out some of the good stuff. This Moorish creation is based on a geometric, sparse and lineal Tuareg base, but ornamented to the hilt with those Arab/ Mauritanian knobbies. It works. Pic 2. * Pic 3. * Reverse view. 6-1/2" inner circumference, 2-1/4" inner diameter. (57mm inner diam.) Face is 1-1/2" x 1-3/16ths. Hand wrought / forged, from very good coin silver. SOLD.

MA074: Moroccan coin silver jackal's paw pendant. Old, between 60-70% pure. There are 2 bails on this, top and bottom, and from end to end this measurement is exactly 2-1/2 inches. (6.4cm ) The width is 2" -- actually, I can see it being used either horizontally or vertically!!. $35. SOLD.
Item MA060: Antique khamsa from Tunisia. approx. 1-1/2" long.. SOLD.
Item MA065: Antique Tunisian bezima. (Fibula) Sold out!!!
MA110: This necklace contains a weighty portion of the finest, oldest Berber branch coral -- "knuckles", the stuff that is the most valuable, has the most tactile satisfaction, and simply will never again be harvested from the Mediterranean sea. Unretouched photos show the true color. This is the branch coral of protective legend. All the silver beads and coins interspersed are old and fine. The necklace is also adjustable due to a clever hand braided sliding closure with bead, made in Morocco. The length around is about 29 inches total --the length of coral only and not the black cord is 16 inches. The bead slides fairly tight so it should hold at any length...? By the way, the coral smells wonderful. $645. SOLD. Hassaniya
MA111: Nice old Tiznit enamel headdress piece, with a bit of niello, is an authentic antique, and is sewn onto a chamois-like soft suede black choker band that can be tied at the back of the neck. From Morocco. SOLD.
MA071: Old Moroccan Amulet box, made for triple stranding, has pendant bails below for dangles. $25. SOLD.
MA107: High Atlas khamsa in 800 quality silver. Mihrab elements. Antique, in excellent condition, with a hypnotic patina. 2-3/4" long including bail. SOLD .
MA105: Quality antique natural coral, acquired in the Draa Valley, Morocco... These large, rare beads are smooth, gem-quality, and solid (dense, not porous.) This old Mediterranean coral has been in loving hands for at least 200, up to 500 years. SOLD
MA073: Mauritanian coin silver bangle. Very collectible! Inner diameter is 2-9/16" or 6.5cm. SOLD.
AF012: Sahraoui bracelet and armlet: High silver. The arm cuff on the left is a Berber style from the Ziz valley, worn just below the bicep, traditionally. This one was smaller than others i have seen. It can be worn comfortably at the wrist. The opening is 23mm. Do you love heavy silver? Rouach says these are 17th and 18th century. Sorry, all SOLD.
MA114: A true antique Tunisian silver chain, 38 inches of hand made "silsilah." This necklace was a choice selection i have kept in my collection for years. It was in the best condition of all the rest: solid quality. The best of the best. A lot of flash for a lightweight chain, and easy to wear! $115. SOLD.
MA115: Here is a fascinating find -- extremely fine craftsmanship in Mexican Sterling silver, but wholly a Tunisian design, 29 inches around. It's a good investment in silver: sturdy yet lightweight, will stand the test of time. $42. SOLD.

Moroccan Berber pendant. Cloisonne enamel on sterling quality silver.
These antique and vintage ornaments from TUNISIA were all hand selected from pawn shops in the old medina of Tunis, where they were brought by villagers from the outlying areas, to trade for cash or other goods. Perhaps it's not very romantic, but that's the REAL story, and the way it has ALWAYS been. This does not diminish the fact that these items are and were the most treasured personal objet d'art in the Mediterranean, cherished by the women who wore them for their protective qualities.
Their distinctive aesthetic for the abstract is clearly African. Arabesque foliate patterns swirl within a framework, much like the multifoiled tin lamps and stained glass windows seen thru-out the Maghreb and parts of Europe, combined with the occasional Crescent moon or Star of David or geometric matrix. Biomorphic shapes echoing fish (fecundity) and doves (love) are common symbols that may be found. Also, remember that in the Arab world, paradise is often symbolized as a garden. However, i think it is best to enjoy the new form that emerges rather than extract a mundane analysis of parts. These well-loved examples shine like a delightful mirror of intentional ambiguity upon us, reflecting a subjective, imaginative feeling that is much more exciting.
All are 90 -to- 98% silver.
